FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE COURSES ARE DESIGNED TO HELP YOU SUCCEED!
The nationally recognized First-Year Experience Program (FYE) supports student transitions to college through University (UNIV in class schedule) and General Education U-courses (section numbers 50 or 51 in the class schedule) that incorporate High Impact Practices, including collaborative and active learning, peer mentors and engagement with public issues through a Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP) event.
Our PSP events include the Town Hall Meeting for POLS 155, where students interact with local experts in chosen policy areas and Sense of Place for U-Courses and our UNIV courses, where students present their research to faculty and local professionals who have an invested interest in their learning. These active
learning strategies are proven to provide benefits to college students of all backgrounds, including higher grade point averages and higher student satisfaction with their education.
FYE-specific first-year courses are purposefully designed to help students explore their identity and interests, develop successful skills and habits, and make close connections to peers and faculty. Research clearly shows that students who become active and engaged members of the university community in their first year are more likely to make it to graduation than students who do not. Take one or more of the following classes in your first semester and set yourself up for long-term success in your college career!

Here’s what students said about attending Town Hall Meeting
“It was an overall great experience. I enjoyed working with my group...our project was based on homelessness and how students could help lower the population and become more aware of the truth behind it.”
“The Town Hall really inspired me to get more involved in my community and stay educated on current politics. I was a little intimidated in the beginning of the discussion, but once I started speaking up I felt empowered.”

Here’s what students said about attending Sense of Place
“Sense of Place meant that Chico State does care about their students to host an event and share your research that you worked so hard on... it showed that the school actually cares about the students and it made me feel happy about that.”
“For me, Sense of Place meant [providing] an opportunity for me to grow as an individual by improving my public speaking skills, my communication skills in ...how I engaged with the audience... Sense of Place definitely helped me improve my self-esteem and I am thankful for that. We gained knowledge on how to conduct proper research from start to end and that’s truly amazing because now in the future we, as students, will do better...conducting research.”
