                                                 PLAN YOUR DEGREE
PLAN YOUR DEGREE
There are three basic types of courses that make up your degree:
1. General Education Courses–48 units
2. Major Courses–the number of courses varies by major
3. Elective Courses–additional courses you need to fulfill the total number of units needed to graduate (120-128)
GENERAL EDUCATION
You must complete 48 units (16 courses) of GE coursework. Some of this GE coursework can also “double-count” toward major and graduation requirements. GE is organized into three broad areas:
Lower Division–39 units
Oral Communication (A1), Written Communication (A2), Critical Thinking (A3), and Mathematics (B4) must be completed with a C– or better. Please note: A2 and B4 must be attempted within your first two semesters. Additionally, students take lower division courses in Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning (B), Arts and Humanities
(C), Social Sciences (D), Lifelong Learning and Self-Development (E), and Ethnic Studies (F). We recommend you complete these courses early
in your college career as they serve as building blocks to later course work. Students fulfill their American Institutions requirement with History 130 and Political Science 155. These courses prepare you to be an active and informed member of a democratic society.
Upper Division Pathway–9 units
Three courses that expose you to a variety of Scientific Inquiry & Quantitative Reasoning (UDB), Arts & Humanities (UDC), and Social Sciences (UDD). These requirements are organized into
ten Pathways to offer an integrated learning experience across the University academic disciplines. Students must complete their 9 upper- division units within one pathway.
TIP
If you are receiving a Cal Grant, the award is limited to four academic years. Depending on your education level, Cal Grant eligibility may be less than four academic years. Consult the Financial Aid office if you have questions about your Cal Grant award.

Chico State’s innovative and nationally- recognized General Education (GE) Program organizes courses into thematic Pathways and allows the opportunity to earn an interdisciplinary minor that will enhance the resumé of students in any major.
GE courses don’t just prepare you for a specific job; they prepare you for any job, by teaching you how to think critically, how to write effectively, how to problem-solve, and how to build just societies and restore a sustainable planet.
