Any times specified in these procedures may be shortened or lengthened if there is mutual concurrence by all parties.
PRIVACY RIGHTS OF STUDENTS
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 applies to any educational institution receiving federal funds.
FERPA [at 20 U.S.C. ยง 1232 g (d)] requires schools to allow college students the right to inspect and review their education records. When students request access to their education records, schools must grant that access within a reasonable time, not to exceed 45 days.
Students also must be given the opportunity for a hearing to challenge the content of their education records, to ensure that the records are not inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of their privacy or other rights.
Education records include those records, files, documents and other material that contain information directly related to a student and that are maintained by the school or by an agent of the school. Schools cannot release, or provide access to any personally identifiable information in education other than directory information without written consent. Violating FERPA results in a loss of federal funds.
