HOW TO TRANSFER TO A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE
STEP 1: NARROW DOWN YOUR FOUR-YEAR CAMPUS AND MAJOR OPTIONS
Although this is often difficult, you will eventually need to know a specific college and major to determine specific requirements for transfer. Many students have found taking Counseling 1 (Academic Planning) and Counseling 12 (Career Exploration) to be helpful in narrowing down their major and four-year campus options. You may also want to review online college catalogs in the Transfer Center and determine majors, course content and other information. The Transfer Center provides additional services such as campus tours and individual appointments with university representatives so you can get a better feel for the student life and transfer requirements.
STEP 2: FULFILL YOUR GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
You can complete the CSU GE or the IGETC certification pattern if you wish to transfer to a CSU. If you plan to transfer to a CSU or a UC then you need to complete the IGETC pattern. Have official copies of all your prior college transcripts sent to IVC’s Office of Admissions and Records and make a counseling appointment for transcript evaluation. Some UC campuses do not accept the IGETC pattern for certain majors and private universities’ general education requirements may differ. See a counselor for further assistance. Both patterns are available in the catalog, Counseling, Career and Transfer Center and online at assist.org.
STEP 3: COMPLETE PREREQUISITES FOR THE MAJOR
These are the courses specified in the particular major at the college you have chosen that should be completed before you transfer. Go to assist.org to view the CSU and UC major requirements or the appropriate private university website for their major requirements.
STEP 4: COMPLETE THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF UNITS AND GRADES
You must have 60 transferable semester units, including your general education and major requirements for UC or CSU. At IVC, courses numbered 1-199 transfer to the CSU and courses numbered 1-99 transfer to the UC. Students can see a detailed list by going to assist.org. You also need to maintain a minimum of at least a 2.4 GPA for UC and 2.0 for CSU in your transferable courses. GPA and unit requirements may differ for private universities. Meeting these criteria establishes minimum eligibility but does not guarantee admission.
Transfer Admission Guarantees are available for some UCs, CSUs, out-of-state, and private schools, and require specific GPAs, courses, and course deadlines. Visit admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/guarantee for more information on UC TAGs, adegreewithaguarantee.com for CSU Associate
