Health Plans
South Carolina law (Section 59-63-80 and 59-63-90) requires school districts to inform parents and/or legal guardians of the rights of students with special health needs. Students who qualify for services related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and/or homebound regulations may be entitled to an Individual Health Care Plan. For additional information about Individual Health Care Plans, you may contact your school nurse or the District Health Services Coordinator. Administration of Oral Medication
Prior to administering any oral medication prescribed by a physician, the following procedures must be followed:
1. A signed and dated statement from the prescribing physician or
prescription bottle giving specific information concerning the medication administration must be on file. Adjustment in previously prescribed medications will be accepted over the telephone.
2. A written statement from the parent or guardian must be on file outlining the medication, time of administration, and dates to be administered.
3. The prescribed medication, the physician’s statement (prescription bottle), and the parental statement must be delivered to the school nurse or district health official.
