order to attend school, and continues to accumulate unlawful absences. Should other community alternatives and referrals fail to remedy the attendance problem, the “chronic” truant may be referred to the Family Court for violation of a previous court order. All school intervention plans existing to this point for this child and family must accompany the Contempt of Court petition as well as the written recommendation from the school to the court on action the court should take.
Requirements for Attendance
Students are expected to attend school regularly. Requirements for attendance are 42/45 days in a 9-week course, 85/90 days in an 18-week (one semester) course. Students in diploma, RATE, or certificate programs must all meet these same requirements. Students must be in class at least one hour to receive credit for the class.
Attendance Recapture
Attendance Recapture is a program designed to assist students who have used more than the maximum allowable absences in South Carolina public schools. This program can only assist those students who have exceeded the limits by narrow margins. There is a $10 charge for each class period recovered by students in this program. Principals and counselors can provide additional information. Tentatively, recapture days are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30- 5:30pm as follows:
College/Military Visits
Juniors and seniors may participate in college or military installation visits up to two days during the fall semester and up to two days during the spring semester. For attendance purposes, these four days per year will be listed as college days; however, students are required to submit letters or other verifications of attendance from universities, colleges, or military personnel. The documents must be printed on official stationery and identify specific dates of attendance.
Credit Denial Due to Insufficient Attendance
Grade level administrators will review each attendance situation at the end of the course. When extenuating circumstances arise, the grade level administrator will determine if credit will be granted. The
