Do you know what constitutes a hate crime?
Trigger Warning: Hate Crime. It is important that you know the legal definitions related to hate crimes and hate incidents:
Hate Crime – A crime which in whole or part is motivated by the offender’s bias toward the victim’s status, whether it be his or her actual or perceived race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability.
Hate Incident – An action in which a person is made aware that his or her status is offensive to another, but does not rise to the level of a crime.
Some people may have stereotypes of individuals who differ from them in socially significant ways and will use these stereotypes to carry out either crimes or behaviors intended to harm the other person. Report a hate crime or hate incident to the Northeast State Police Department at 423.677.7927 (emergency cell) or call 9-1-1.
