Athletics Department
Birmingham City Schools Athletics Program (BCS) is an essential component of the district’s holistic educational mission. Our philosophy embraces the concept of student-athletes being students first, as well as the principles of fair play, sportsmanship, and gender equity in relation to Title IX.
As member schools of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, BCS athletics is committed to complying with all rules and regulations of the AHSAA in the conduct of its interscholastic athletics department. Your family interest in this important component of our school program is gratifying. We believe that participation in sports provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences which assist students in personal growth and accomplishments while promoting student-athlete welfare.
It is the role of the athletics’ department to implement rules that govern the spirit of competition for the school.
We are concerned with the educational development of boys and girls through athletics, and believe a properly controlled, well-organized sports program can meet student needs for self- expression, social, mental and physical growth. It is our intent to conduct a program that is educationally sound in this purpose and that enhances each student's personal growth.
A student who elects to participate in athletics is voluntarily making a choice of self-discipline. For this reason, we emphasize hard work, dedication, and good training habits. Failure to comply with the rules of training and violation to the conduct policy could result in dismissal from the athletic program at Birmingham City Schools. There is no place in athletics for students who will not discipline their minds and bodies for rigorous competition. We are striving for excellence, and do not want our athletes to accept the idea of mediocrity.
Great athletic tradition is not built overnight; it takes the hard work and dedication of many people over many years. As a member of an interscholastic athletic team of Birmingham City Schools, you have inherited a Championship tradition which you are challenged to uphold. Our tradition has been to win with class, honor, respect and dignity. We desire to win, but only with class of our athletes, to honor our schools, and with the respect for our community. Such a tradition is worthy of the best efforts of all concerned. Over many years our teams have achieved many region, area, state, and tournament championships. Many individuals have set state, school, and district records as well as achieved All-American, All-State and All-District honors.
The AHSAA and Birmingham City Schools promote positive sports behavior by student-athletes, coaches, and spectators as all athletic events. We request cooperation by supporting the participants and officials at all contests in a positive manner. Profanity, racial, sexist, or other abusive comments or actions directed at officials, student-athletes, coaches, or team representatives will not be tolerated and will be grounds for removal from the athletics site.
It will not be easy to contribute to such a great athletic tradition, but each contribution you make should be a satisfying accomplishment to you and your family. Ask your school AD how to sign- up for athletics in the Birmingham City School System. Let the tradition continue with you!
