Services Provided: The Career and Technical Education Department of Birmingham City Schools (BCS) provides students with career opportunities that enable them to be college and career ready upon graduation from high school. Students are able to explore career options in their middle school years. Following exposure to various career opportunities, students are encouraged to select a career pathway beginning in either their ninth or tenth grade year. BCS offers 14 of the 16 national career clusters as options for our students to succeed (See programs listed below). Enrolling in Career and Technical Education courses allow students access to the experience of major business and industry leaders, leadership of highly qualified teachers, valuable life experience and the ability to earn industry recognized certifications. All of these combined, provide employability skills to meet the demands of today’s workforce. BCS offers Career and Technical Education programs throughout our seven comprehensive high schools. Furthermore, the Regional CRAFT program located in the Avondale community provides trade training accompanying job opportunities. The Ready-to-Work program prepares student with soft skills training, industry tours, and employment upon successful completion. Dual enrollment programs provide opportunities for students to earn college credit while in high school at no cost to parents.
