1) You will need a list of the following in order to complete your FAFSA:
(If you are under the age of twenty-four (24), you may need this information from your parents as well.) Collect financial related documents for you and your parents if applicable (e.g., tax returns, payroll stubs, bank account statements, etc.) to complete the FAFSA. To learn about the documents you may need to reference, please visit the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.gov
California Residents Only: If you wish to be considered for a Cal Grant, please check with the El Camino College Financial Aid Office for details. Please note that a FAFSA needs to be submitted in order to be considered for a Cal Grant. The deadline for submission is March 2.
2) Go to www.fafsa.gov and select “Start a New FAFSA” if this is your first time applying for financial aid. If you have applied before and you have your FSA ID, select “Returning User” to renew a FAFSA, make corrections or add a school code. ECC’s School Code is 001197.
3) Carefully review all the questions and answers and make sure all the information is correct.
4) Submit your application online using the “Submit My FAFSA Now” button. You will receive a confirmation page via email if you provided an email address and/or you may print a copy of the confirmation page for your records.
5) A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be emailed to you, if you provided one on the FAFSA, within a few days. If you did not provide an email, a SAR will be mailed to you within a few weeks. Please review your SAR carefully and verify all the information is correct. If all information is correct, the U.S. Department of Education will send your information to the schools listed on your FAFSA. If errors are found, please log in to the FAFSA and make corrections.
3. Complete your application
The U.S. Department of Education may select students for further review by requesting additional documents to accurately determine financial aid eligibility (a process known as ‘verification’). The Financial Aid Office at El Camino College (located in the Communications Building 103) is here to assist you with this process and must receive these verification documents in a timely manner in order to complete your application. Your application cannot be processed until all requested forms and documents are submitted.
Remember, completing the FAFSA is the first step in applying for state and federal financial aid, including scholarships. To learn about what to expect after you fill out and submit your FAFSA visit studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa/next-steps.
