How many units must I take to be considered a full-time student?
Taking 12 units in the fall and spring semester is considered a full-time load. To be eligible for athletics and certain programs, a student must be considered full time in the fall and spring semesters only. Summer is an optional session to take courses.
What is the maximum number of units I can take?
The college policy for the maximum number of units per semester is 18. Students wishing to take more than 18 units in one semester must complete a student petition form requesting an overload. Students must have completed at least 15 transferable units in one semester (fall/spring only) at ECC with a 2.75 GPA and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher to be eligible for an overload. A counselor must approve this petition.
How long will it take me to complete my goal at ECC?
It depends on a variety of factors, such as how many courses you can take per semester or if you have other personal responsibilities that will determine the number of hours you will be able to devote to school (see page 13 under “What is a Unit?”). Determine how many classes you need to meet your goal and calculate how many classes you can take per semester. Remember, summer sessions offer many course selections and can assist in speeding up achievement of your educational goal.
What is the attendance policy?
Attendance is the responsibility of the student. Each instructor has his/her own method of accountability for attendance. Although attendance may seem unstructured, the student has to make class attendance a priority. If your absences and tardiness exceed the unit value of the course, you may be dropped.
Do I have to declare a major?
It is not necessary to declare a major the first semester you enter. However, under the Student Success Guidelines it is essential that you declare an educational goal. You are also expected to spend time exploring educational options. We recommend you take advantage of the Career Center and its counselors. We also suggest you consider enrolling in a Human Development 5 – Career Planning class.
Can students bring children to class?
Children are not permitted in classrooms while class is in session. Attendance in class is limited to officially enrolled students and authorized visitors or guests. In addition, students must not allow children to be left unsupervised or unattended anywhere on campus.
