HOW TO TRANSFER TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY
Get help! Utilize the many services offered by the Transfer Center (Located in the Student Services Center; Counseling Office, 1st floor) and set up an appointment with an academic counselor, a Transfer Center counselor, or a university representative to review where you are in meeting transfer admissions requirements. The following six steps can be a guide to your approach:
STEP 1: NARROW DOWN YOUR FOUR-YEAR CAMPUSES AND MAJOR OPTIONS
Although this is often difficult, you will want to focus on a major and a university to determine your specific requirements for transfer. Take some time to explore your interests, values, and skills when choosing a major. Then conduct a search for the campus that best fits what you are looking for in a university. Look at university catalogs, visit university websites, meet with a university representative, and go on a tour of the university to get a feel for the campus environment. You may also want to check www.assist.org to use the “Explore Majors” function to get a list of universities that offer your major.
STEP 2: FULFILL YOUR GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
You can do this by fulfilling the CSU General Education certification pattern if you wish to transfer to a CSU or the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) pattern if you wish to apply to a UC or CSU. It is important to note that the IGETC pattern may not be appropriate for certain majors; check www.assist.org or make an appointment with a counselor for information. The general education patterns for many independent universities are also available in the Counseling Center.
STEP 3: COMPLETE THE NUMBER OF REQUIRED TRANSFERABLE UNITS/GRADES
You must complete a minimum of 60 transferable units to meet minimum admissions requirements for UC and CSU. Less units are required for transfer admissions to many independent universities. A minimum grade point average of a 2.0 for CSU and a 2.4 for a UC is required in transferable courses. However, the minimum grade point average does not guarantee acceptance to all campuses and all majors. The higher your grade point average is, the greater the chance of being accepted to the university and major of your choice.
STEP 4: COMPLETE ANY REQUIRED MAJOR PREREQUISITES
In order to be most competitive and most prepared, courses specified in the particular major at the university you have chosen should be completed before transfer. You will want to consult www.assist.org or check the major guide sheets located in the Counseling Center for specific major requirements at various colleges and universities. If transferring to a UC, please inquire about the Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) agreements that we offer with UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside and UC Merced. All TAGs require that you take transferable English and math courses early in your ECC educational plan. If transferring to a CSU, inquire about Transfer Associate (AA/AS-T) degrees that will enable you to streamline admission major requirements for
