THE PERFECT SCHEDULE
STEP 1: Decide on how many units you want to take.
In deciding how many units to take, it is important that you plan time for attending classes, completing homework, and working. It is recommended that for every one hour you spend in class you need to allow two hours of homework per week. For example, if you plan to take 12 units you need to reserve 24 hours to complete your homework. This would make going to class and completing your homework a total of 36 hours for the week. If you work, we recommend the following:
Work:
40 hours per week 30 hours per week 20 hours per week
Take no more than:
6 units
9 units 12 units
You can take from .5 to 19 units. To take more than 19 units you need to fill out an Overload Petition form available online at https://admissions.ivc.edu/forms.
STEP 2: Balance your class schedule.
If you are planning to be a full-time student (taking 12-19 units), it is important to balance your schedule with the following classes:
• Take English and math based upon your assessment results.
It is important to complete these courses as soon as possible, especially if you
are planning to transfer.
• Take counseling courses. Students have found these courses to be helpful
in transitioning to IVC and be a successful student. o Counseling 1 – Academic Planning
