 HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR TRANSFERABLE GPA
Your IVC transcript provides you an overall grade point average, GPA, that may include transferable and non-transferable courses. If you are planning to transfer to a CSU or UC you need to know how to calculate your transferable GPA. At IVC, we use the 4.0 grade point system. Review the following value chart to help you determine your transferable GPA.
Grade
A = Excellent
B = Good
C = Satisfactory
D = Passing, less than satisfactory
F = Failing
FW=Failing Withdrawal (beg. Spring’19) 0.0
Other annotations on your transcripts but are not part of the GPA computation:
P = Pass Equivalent to “A”, “B”, “C”; units are earned but not counted in GPA
NP = No Pass Equivalent to “D” or “F”, no units are earned and are not counted in GPA
The formula for computing your GPA is: Total Grade Points divided by Total Units Attempted.
Steps to take:
• Print out an unofficial copy of your transcripts on MySite. Your IVC
unofficial transcript has your overall GPA (transferable and non-transferable
classes). UC and CSU campuses are only interested in transferable GPA.
• Determine if the class is a transferable class by looking at the course number.
Courses #1-99 transfer to UC and courses #1-199 transfer to CSU. You can check on assist.org to confirm transferable courses. If the transferable class has a grade of A, B, C, D, or F, highlight the units and the grade points of this class. Add all highlighted transferable number of units completed. Add all highlighted transferable number of grade points. Grade point computation is units attempted multiplied by grade value.
Example: Course
Psyc 1 Comm 1 Math 253 Coun 1
Units Grade Attempted
3 A
3 B
5 C 1.5 P
3     12 (3x4) 3     9 (3x3) 5     10 (5x2) 1.5     0
Class transfers, include in GPA.
Class transfers, include in GPA.
Class does not transfer.
Class transfers, but since grade is Pass, do not include in GPA calculation.

                         • To calculate transferable GPA to UC and CSU campuses only use Psych 1 and Comm 1 courses since courses received letters grades and they are transferable.
• Divide Total Grade Points by Total Units: 21/6 = 3.5 UC and CSU Transferable GPA
