GRADES
GRADE POLICIES
The State Legislature mandates a grading policy for all California community colleges. In compliance with this mandate, the South Orange County Community
College District has established the following provisions:
Definition
A Excellent
B Good
C Satisfactory 2
D Passing 1
F Failing 0
FW Failing Withdrawal (Starting spring 2019) 0
P Pass (equivalent to “A,” “B” or “C”; units are earned but not
counted in the student’s GPA)
NP No Pass (equivalent to “D” or “F”; no units are earned or counted in
the student’s GPA)
SP Satisfactory Progress (non-credit only); no units are earned, and
units are not counted in GPA
UG Ungraded (non-credit only); no units are earned, and units are not
counted in GPA
OTHER SYMBOLS THAT ARE NOT USED IN CALCULATING YOUR GPA
I: INCOMPLETE
In emergency cases and if it is too late to withdraw, you can ask the instructor to give you an Incomplete. You have a maximum of one year to complete the course with the same instructor. (The instructor may stipulate a shorter period.) An “I” symbol will be noted on your transcripts but it is not calculated in the GPA. Excessive “Is” are used as a factor in progress probation and dismissal procedures. See the IVC catalog for further information.
IP: WORK IN PROGRESS
The “IP” symbol indicates that work is “in progress” and that the assignment of a grade must await its completion.
RD: REPORT DELAYED
The “RD” symbol is used when there is a delay in reporting the student’s grade due to circumstances beyond the student’s control. It is a temporary notation to be replaced by a permanent symbol as soon as possible.
