Media Center Procedures
1. The media center is open from 7:00 a.m. until 3:55 p.m. Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Roberts are eager to help students locate reliable sources on the shelves and in Mackin, our platform for digital sources, and find good books to read. Ask them for assistance whenever you visit the library. As a BHS student, you have access to thousands of books, hundreds of ebooks, and dozens of databases to help you with projects or prepare for the ACT, SAT, ASVAB, and AP exams. Use them!
2. Individual students may visit the media center during class with a pass signed by a teacher, not a substitute. Students must sign in and may have their passes signed with arrival and departure times. During Power Hour, the library is open the entire time but lunch must be consumed before entering the library.
3. Students should be engaged in library appropriate work, such as reading or research.
4. Students may check out library materials by presenting a current school ID. Books, magazines, and other items such as eBooks, online magazines, and audio recordings are checked out for a period of 28 days and may be renewed once, unless there is a request for the item.
5. Reference books may be checked out overnight at the end of the school day and should be returned before first period the next school day.
6. Library materials should be returned to the Book Return box near the circulation desk by the date shown on the inside the book.
7. The overdue fine for library materials checked out for a period of 28 days is 10 cents per school day, and the overdue fine for reference books is $1.00 per school day. Students with fines or overdue library materials cannot check out or reserve library materials. Notices of fines and overdue library materials will be sent to students at regular intervals. Students are encouraged to check their school email account for notices and take advantage of reading in the library before school, after school, or during power hour to reduce fines up to $5.00. Ten minutes of reading clears $1.00 in fines, and either Mrs. Hill or Mrs. Roberts should be notified beforehand to adjust the fee. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not relieve students of the responsibility of paying the fine.
