RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SMCC STUDENTS
When traveling around the world, your passport enables you to easily move from one region to the next. But once you arrive in a new country, it’s crucial to gain an understanding of the rules and laws that govern the land. That’s what this next section of your Student Planner is designed to provide.
It is all about doing what you need to do to have a successful experience at South Mountain Community College.
The Governing Board of the Maricopa Community Colleges has established policies, procedures, rules and regulations designed to provide a safe and positive learning environment. Students are expected to know and comply with these regulations in the classroom, and throughout the college.
Knowing what is expected of you will help you do your best as a student. The regulations included in this section clarify, for example, whether you can be absent from class, what is required to be in the Honors program, why it is important to submit the paperwork to withdraw from a class, and how copyright and technology use limitations may impact you, among other things. It is an important part of your responsibility as a student to know and comply with all such college policies and regulations.
You also have rights as a student that you will want to know. You can appeal a grade you feel is unfair, but you need to know what the process is. You can establish a new student club, by following the designated steps. And you have the right not to have your class interrupted by someone else’s disruptive behavior. These rights,
and others, are described in this section of your Student Planner.
The regulations that students most commonly ask about are briefly summarized on the Maricopa Community College web page, which will contain the complete policy information. If you have additional questions, the office of the Vice President of Student Development, located in the Student Enrollment Services building, will be pleased to assist you.
We wish you a successful college experience!
