• Coordinates accommodations and related support services to students with disabilities;
• Serves as an advocate for students with disabilities while promoting independence, self-advocacy and personal responsibility.
It is a student’s responsibility to disclose their disability and to request academic or physical accommodations. Disability information is not obtained through SCC’s admission process. Requests are made directly to the SDS coordinator, who will see that services are available in a timely manner. Some accommodations can take several weeks to arrange (i.e. sign language interpreters), so early contact is important.
Students requesting accommodations are expected to provide current, comprehensive documentation of their disability from a professional who is qualified
to make such a diagnosis. Documentation should be sent or given only to the SDS coordinator. Disability records are maintained separately from academic records and are regarded in a confidential manner as outlined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974. Overlooked sources of documentation and/or legitimate ways of helping students with disabilities who have no documentation may also be available.
Disability services are provided when deemed necessary and reasonable for a particular student and are determined on a case-by-case basis through collaboration between the student and the SDS coordinator. Approved accommodations may include: alternative testing arrangements; note-takers or use of a recording device; use of a spell- checker or calculator; alternative format textbooks; preferential seating, room relocation, or ergonomic tools; video captioning, sign-language interpreters, or FM hearing systems; and other assistive technology (computer screen readers, reader pens).
Contact the Student Disability Services Coordinator at 828.339.4326 to initiate the process to request services. Visit www.southwesterncc.edu/disability_services for details about requesting services, documentation guidelines and academic accommodations.
E-LEARNING
The E-Learning Department is committed to student success by supporting efforts to ensure that quality online education and support services are available to all SCC students, regardless of their location.
Moodle is the Learning Management System used by SCC, and all SCC students have access. For web-assisted, hybrid, or online / web-centered courses, you will be using Moodle. Instructors of traditional courses may also supplement their courses with Moodle resources. To help you get started in Moodle, consider one of the following:
• Online Moodle Orientation – This course will appear on the homepage of the Moodle e-Campus and will be available throughout your coursework at SCC. This course is not graded but provides you the opportunity to get comfortable using Moodle and to ask questions.
• Face to Face Orientation – Please visit the e-learning website (www.southwesterncc. edu/e-learning/students) for more details, dates, and times.
GRADES/TRANSCRIPT ONLINE
Students will have online access to their grades and academic transcripts. Southwestern Community College does not send report cards through the U.S. mail
at the end of each semester. Through MySCC, students can use their computer access username and password to check their grade and transcript information. SCC continues to mail official copies of transcripts on an as-needed basis, per request of the student. The student must communicate the request through the Registrar’s Office. For information on activating your computer access account, contact SCC Computer Support at 828.339.4424 or 800.447.4091, ext. 4424.
