LEARNING ASSISTANCE CENTER/TUTORING
The Jackson LAC is open 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m.-
noon on Friday during fall and spring semesters. (An LAC also is available on the Macon Campus.) Summer hours vary but usually are 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8 a.m.-noon, Friday. The LAC is closed on holidays and breaks; any unusual closing are posted in a Notice at the main Learning Assistance Web page: https://www.southwesterncc.edu/ learning-assistance/learning-assistance
You are invited to study and work in the LAC! Then, if you have a question or need help, a Learning Consultant is available. Consultants have earned at least one bachelor’s degree, and some have master’s degrees. (Many also serve as tutors and/or adjunct instructors.) They provide assistance with basic to intermediate computer problems, and help to build skills necessary for success in college, such as studying, taking notes, and testing effectively. Mathematics support is most sought; thus, an Advanced Math Consultant is always on duty. Also, an Advanced Writing and Advanced Computer Consultant are available during most operating hours. All services are FREE! To view a current subject-assistance schedule, visit https://www.southwesterncc.edu/learning- assistance/jackson-lac-subject-assistance-schedule and/or view LAC posters on campus bulletin boards. Services are provided on a drop-in basis; however, appointments may be made by calling the LAC Coordinator at 828.339.4325. Students also have the option of using the Self-Referral link available under “Need Our Help?” at the bottom of the LAC Web page: https://www.southwesterncc.edu/learning-assistance/lac
The Jackson LAC features a 16-station computer lab, a printer, and four enclosed study carrels with computers. Those in the carrels also offer Fusion 2018 (Zoom Text
and JAWS); a scanner is available in one carrel. All LAC computers support Read & Write software. Students are able to access and use Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and Visual Studio (Visual C#, Visual C++, Visual Basic, and JavaScript), as well.
Test Proctoring
The LAC also proctors exams for online/hybrid classes as well as the occasional missed exam for web-supported/traditional classes. Our Testing Room, which also is
a Pearson VUE certified GED testing center, houses twenty computers; two present Fusion 2018. In order to be prepared for the proctoring experience—and thus lessen test anxiety—first read the “IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS” section at https:// www.southwesterncc.edu/learning-assistance/exam-proctoring. For example, a photo I.D. must be presented in order to test. Also, allow enough time to finish testing before the center closes! For more information, call the Jackson LAC/Online Tutoring Coordinator at 828.339.4325.
In-House Tutoring
Looking for a Tutor? SCC’s Tutor Program also offers assistance to students enrolled in curriculum classes. Tutoring is FREE and is provided one-on-one or in small group sessions. Trained peer and non-peer tutors offer skills-based, academic assistance and encourage student achievement and academic excellence. Two weeks after fall and spring semesters begin, students may schedule in-house tutor sessions by clicking on the “Tutoring” button in any Moodle course. (The Tutor Program does not operate during summer sessions.) After logging in with MySCC credentials, on the left side of the split screen that appears— under “Southwestern Community College (SCC) Free Tutoring Appointments”—click “Start Now” at the bottom. Study the legend before clicking “Book Now” at the top, right of the box that appears. Next click “Schedule a Session”. If needed, call 828.339.4304, email
