COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
MAT 121 Algebra/Trigonometry I (2-2-3)
Prerequisites: DMA 010, DMA 020, DMA 030, DMA 040, DMA 050, and DMA 060; MAT 003 This course provides an integrated approach to technology and the skills required to manipulate, display, and interpret mathematical functions and formulas used in problem solving. Topics include the properties of plane and solid geometry, area and volume, and basic proportion applications; simpli cation, evaluation, and solving of algebraic equations and inequalities and radical functions; complex numbers; right triangle trigonometry; and systems of equations. Upon completion, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use mathematics and technology for problem-solving, analyzing and communicating results.
MAT 122 Algebra/Trigonometry II (2-2-3)
Prerequisite: MAT 121
This course is designed to cover concepts in algebra, function analysis, and trigonometry.
Topics include exponential and logarithmic functions, transformations of functions, Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, vectors, and statistics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to use mathematics and technology for problem-solving, analyzing and communicating results.
MAT 141 Mathematical Concepts I (3-0-3)
Prerequisites: DMA 010, DMA 020, DMA 030, DMA 040; and MAT 003 and College-ready English Placement
This course is the rst of a two-course sequence that develops a deeper understanding and appreciation of the basic concepts of mathematics. Emphasis is placed on sets, logic, number bases, elementary number theory, introductory algebra, measurement including metrics, and problem solving. Upon completion, students should be able to communicate orally and in writing these basic mathematical concepts. Under the CAA, this course satis- es the general education Mathematics requirement for the AA and AFA degrees. It does not satisfy the general education Mathematics requirement for the AS degree.
MAT 142 Mathematical Concepts II (3-0-3)
Prerequisite: MAT 141
This course is the second of a two-course sequence that develops a deeper understanding
and appreciation of the basic concepts of mathematics. Emphasis is placed on probability, statistics, functions, introductory geometry, and mathematics of nance. Upon completion, students should be able to communicate orally and in writing these basic mathematical concepts and utilize technology as a mathematical tool. Under the CAA, this course satis es the general education Mathematics requirement for the AA and AFA degrees. It does not satisfy the general education Mathematics requirement for the AS degree.
MAT 143 Quantitative Literacy (2-2-3)
Prerequisites: DMA 010, 020, 030, 040, 050; or MAT 003; and College-ready English Place- ment
This course is designed to engage students in complex and realistic situations involving the mathematical phenomena of quantity, change and relationship, and uncertainty through project- and activity-based assessment. Emphasis is placed on authentic contexts which will introduce the concepts of numeracy, proportional reasoning, dimensional analysis, rates of growth, personal nance, consumer statistics, practical probabilities, and mathematics for citizenship. Upon completion, students should be able to utilize quantitative information as consumers and to make personal, professional, and civic decisions by decoding, interpreting, using, and communicating quantitative information found in modern media and encountered in everyday life. This course has been approved for transfer under the CAA as a general educa- tion course in Mathematics (Quantitative).
