Jazz Studies
Under the direction of Professor Kris Tiner, the new Jazz Studies program at Bakersfield College offers a path to the Music AA-T degree that focuses on jazz literature and improvisation. Music majors who successfully audition into the Applied Music class for jazz performance receive private instruction with Jazz Studies faculty. In addition, BC now offers a full slate of jazz courses that are transferable and open to all musicians, including Jazz Combos and Jazz Improvisation. The centerpiece of the program is the Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble, which performs regularly on campus and at local venues. The concert repertoire spans the history of big band jazz, from classics by Ellington, Monk, and Mingus to new student works.
Jazz students have frequent opportunities interact with renowned visiting artists. Recent guests include jazz icon and Pulitzer Prize finalist Wadada Leo Smith, master percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, composer/producer Chris Schlarb, and legendary drummer Joe La Barbera. Each Fall the
Jazz Studies and Commercial Music programs collaborate to present the Panorama Creative Music Summit, a two-day showcase for original music by students, faculty, and alumni, with workshops and headline performances by visiting artists. In April the Jazz Studies program hosts the annual KCMEA Jazz Day at Bakersfield College, an all-day festival featuring pro clinicians, masterclasses, and performances from regional student jazz ensembles. Find out more about the BC Jazz Studies program at www.bcjazz.org, on Facebook.com/bakersfieldcollegejazz, or via email at krtiner@bakersfieldcollege.edu.
Commercial Music
The Commercial Music Certificate of Achievement is an 18-unit, yearlong program at Bakersfield College that allows students to combine their passions for technology and music. Students will gain basic knowledge in technologies crucial to the modern recording studio, including use of popular digital audio workstations such as Logic and Pro Tools. Exposure to sound synthesis will provide perspective on the infrastructure of today's music software. Experience with audio hardware and software, along with courses in music business and commercial music composition will provide skills necessary to pursue a career in audio engineering, production, performance, composition, promotion, publishing, and many other options. Alongside these courses, Panorama Studios, a fully outfitted recording studio and Panorama Recordings (http://panoramarecordings.com), a student-run record label, contribute to the program's presence in the region. Students also work with the Jazz Studies program to produce and perform in the annual Panorama Creative Music Summit (www.panoramarecordings.com/pcms). Theatre Arts
Theatre Arts is a component of both the liberal arts and general education programs. In addition to acting, the department features film appreciation courses. Students often go on to attend various film schools. Students who major in the various specialties of the dramatic arts often pursue careers in professional theatre, teaching, or activities in community theatre. Many other students have used training in theatre arts toward attaining confidence and self-assurance in professions such as law, religious ministries, and business.
