Federal Work Study
On-campus employment is available through Federal Work-Study (FWS), a federally funded program for students who can demonstrate financial need and enrollment in six or more units. Employment is used to fund college expenses.
Scholarships
More than 500 scholarships are available each year to students who file a General Scholarship Application with the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. The Bakersfield College Foundation, as well as community organizations and private donors, offer scholarships based upon financial need and/or academic merit. The scholarship application process is fully online. The application opens in October and generally ends in early Spring semester. Check the Financial Aid website for additional information.
Some Bakersfield College scholarships have certain requirements including major, class level, or even graduation from a particular high school. Scholarships are awarded to incoming, continuing and transferring students. Generally, a student must have at least a 2.00 GPA and be enrolled in at least six units to be considered for scholarships, although some scholarships have a higher average and/or special criteria required of recipients. Scholarships are awarded only once each academic year.
External Scholarships
There are many outside scholarships available to qualified students. Business firms, organizations and four-year colleges provide scholarships for students. You can learn more about how to find and apply for external scholarships at https://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/finaid/scholarships
Direct Loans
Direct Loans are low-interest loans for students and parents to help pay for the cost of a student's education. The lender is the U.S. Department of Education rather than a bank or other financial institution.
Plus Loans
Loans for parents with good credit histories.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
To be eligible to receive federal and state aid, you must be maintaining progress toward a degree, certificate, or transfer. Maintaining SAP means that you must: 1) complete at least 67% of the units you attempt (pace calculation); 2) maintain a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.0 or higher; and 3) complete your educational program within the Maximum
Timeframe allowed (150% of program length). Students who fail to maintain SAP for two consecutive terms or who reach the Maximum Timeframe allowed will be suspended from receiving financial aid. However, if an extenuating circumstance exists that affected a student’s ability to maintain SAP, an appeal may be filed with the Office of Financial Aid for reinstatement.
