                Annual Evaluation of the Content and Effectiveness Of the LEA Family and Community Engagement Plan
(Required for LEAs with Title I Schools)
SCHOOL SYSTEM: Birmingham City Schools YEAR: 2019-2020
What the law requires:
The LEA must (1) conduct with parents an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parental engagement plan in improving the academic quality of Title I schools, including identifying barriers to greater participation by parents in authorized activities; and (2) use the findings to design more effective strategies and revise the plan.
What were Birmingham City Schools’ student achievement goals this year?
The student achievement goals for Birmingham City Schools were the following:
• Decrease achievement gaps in the areas of reading and mathematics
• Decrease achievement gaps by improving performance of all subgroups including
Special Education, and African American males. Improve the percentage of students performing at or above proficiency on state assessments: Grades 3-8 Scantron, PSAT-9, PSAT-10, PSAT National Merit, Pre-ACT 9th, Pre-Act 10th and ACT plus Writing11th, WorkKeys 12th, Civics-12th.
• Pre-Act 10th and ACT plus Writing11th
• Engage all students through high quality differentiated instruction, assessing
effectiveness and other achievement data at regular intervals
• Identify students who may need support in transitioning to higher education and
provide embedded college remediation courses in their senior year
How did we work as partners with parents in meeting those goals?
The LEA and schools worked with parents as partners by:
• Providing workshops to parents on all core academic levels
• Providing information on community resources
• Providing social and emotional counseling services for students and staff
• Providing conferences and workshops to address the various needs of families
• Providing a resources for families to obtain free academic and social materials
• Providing a trained F.A.CE. Designees to work with parents and families
How can we improve with actively involving parents in the activities of our schools?
The LEA (Birmingham City Schools) and schools can improve with actively involving parents in activities of our schools by:
