Do students receive the exact accommodations they request?
Not necessarily. During the in-person meeting, ADS staff will ask each student questions about how his/her disability impacts the academic environment. With this information, ADS staff will determine appropriate accommodations.
Do colleges apply different standards than K-12 schools in providing accommodations?
Each student’s individual experience, disability documentation and historical documentation, such as Individual Education Plans (IEP) and 504 plans, are reviewed and discussed to identify the most appropriate university-level accommodations.

What is the role of the Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS)?
ADS offers support and assistance to current and incoming students with disabilities and medical conditions
by coordinating and implementing appropriate accommodations and providing resources and services as they relate to academics, university housing, dining and campus activities.
You can request accommodations by going to coastal.edu/disabilityservices/ registerwithads and completing the six-step process. You will first complete and collect various forms to explain
your disability and provide third-party documentation of it. You will then submit all documentation to ADS. Finally, you will schedule an in-person meeting with ADS staff to discuss accommodations.
How can I request accommodations?
What help can ADS provide regarding accessible technology and software? What about tutoring or other services? ADS houses the Testing Center, which allows for a distraction-reduced testing environment and space for extended testing time. ADS also offers academic coaching via one-on-one meetings with a Learning Specialist to focus on academic skill building and study strategies. Academic coaching appointments are initiated by students.
What are the student’s responsibilities in the accommodations process?
Once approved for accommodations, ADS will create a Faculty Notification Form.
It will be the student’s responsibility to advocate for himself/herself and give each professor the form.
Are there times when accommodations are not provided?
Yes, each student is reviewed on a case- by-case basis. The disability support paperwork provided by each student will help ADS staff in determining appropriate accommodations to create an equitable educational experience.
