BECOMING A CHARGER 20 Phi Theta Kappa The Chi Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, is committed to recognizing outstanding scholarship, and to help members obtain academic scholarships and job opportunities while fostering leadership and personal achievement. It offers several national scholarships as well as opportunities to be nominated for additional honors, such as membership on the society’s Academic All-American Team. You’ll have the opportunity to attend conferences, participate in service and volunteer projects, and conduct academic research. To become a member, students must be currently enrolled and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 after a minimum of 12 hours of course work. Honors Program Honors courses are intellectually challenging and involve considerable interaction among students and instructors. Certification as an Honors Program graduate requires you to participate in two honors courses and to complete an honors project. You may apply if you meet one of the following criteria: • A cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher • Top 10% of your high school class • A 25 or above on the ACT • A combined score of 1,000 on the SAT • 12 college transfer credits with a minimum 3.25 GPA or a recommendation from a Sandburg instructor or counselor Students completing 12 hours of honors coursework at Carl Sandburg College may be eligible to transfer into the Centennial Honors College and graduate as a General Honors Scholar at Western Illinois University. International Student Services (ISS) International Student Services (ISS) serves as the primary support unit for international students who study at Sandburg. The mission of ISS is to increase cultural understanding, create new opportunities for education worldwide and bring global talent to the Sandburg community. ISS advises on and facilitates compliance with U.S. immigration regulations, conducts orientations and other special programming to help international students adjust to American culture and acclimate to the Midwest, serving as a liaison with U.S. government agencies, foreign embassies, sponsors and educational foundations that support international students, and helps our students and community increase global awareness through opportunities for growth and cross-cultural interactions.
