The University does not assume any liability for injuries sustained on University property and does not obligate itself for payment of medical services other than those provided by employees or personnel retained by the University and facilities owned by the University. Students are strongly urged to protect themselves against medical expenses that may result from injury or illness by arranging for personal insurance coverage. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange his or her own transportation to off-campus medical facilities when referral is suggested by Health Services. The University is not obligated to provide transportation to other medical facilities. FINANCIAL AID altoona.psu.edu/stuaid W113 Smith Building | 814-949-5055 | StuAidAltoona@psu.edu The Office of Financial Aid provides counseling for students who receive one or more of the four types of financial aid: • Grant, aid based on the student’s financial need that does not have to be repaid. • Scholarship, aid based on financial need, merit, or both that does not have to be repaid. This type of aid may come from Penn State or an outside source, such as a community group, foundation, or business. • Loan, financial aid that is borrowed with interest and must be repaid. • Federal Work-Study, financial aid earned through working on- or off-campus in the Nittany Reads program or an approved community service. This source of financial aid is not deducted on the tuition bill. Students receive a bi-weekly paycheck. Financial Aid Application To be considered for any form of financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Federal School Code for all Penn State locations is 003329. The FAFSA becomes available on October 1. The preferred filing date for submitting the FAFSA is December 1. Emergency Loan Fund Students enrolled at Penn State Altoona may apply for an emergency loan if they can demonstrate sufficient need. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid. A plan for repayment is presented during the application process. It generally takes one week to receive emergency loan funding. Students must have a checking or savings account to electronically receive emergency loan funds. Typically, the loan is to be repaid in 30 days or at the end of the semester, whichever occurs first. Scholarships All students are considered for scholarships. Certain academic colleges require a separate scholarship application. Information on academic college scholarships can be found on our website. It is recommended that all students interested in scholarship consideration complete the FAFSA. Satisfactory Academic Progress Students receiving financial aid must complete a minimum number of credits and maintain a cumulative GPA to keep financial aid eligibility. Students electing to drop a course or believe they may not successfully complete a course are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid to discuss satisfactory academic progress requirements. 25
