Short-term individual counseling by licensed professional clinicians and case management services are offered along with group meetings on topics such as transitioning to college, stress, anxiety, depression, emotional management, relationship difficulties, alcohol and other drug abuse, sexual assault/past abuse, grief, and problematic eating and body image concerns. Crisis appointments are also available. All sessions are confidential, and students work closely with an assigned counselor to develop treatment goals, decrease symptoms, and promote adaptive coping. Individual counseling sessions are free for up to eight sessions based upon clinical need and availability. A $10 per session fee applies to students who exceed eight sessions per academic year. Those needing longer term services or who have more comprehensive mental health needs may be referred to community providers/resources. • CAPS Chat appointments are brief consultations with a counselor for issues such as stress, relationship issues, roommate conflicts, and other distress situational in nature. These appointments are often same-day and as needed with no ongoing engagement in therapy. They are not meant for students in crisis or who are already engaged in counseling through CAPS. • Medication management in conjunction with therapy is available. We also may refer a student engaged with a center counselor to our Health Services providers or our consulting psychiatrist if medication management services are appropriate. • The Penn State Crisis Line, 877-229-6400, is available 24/7 and is staffed by licensed mental health professionals. Health Education Various outreach and educational events take place throughout the year that are designed to enhance the health and well-being of the campus community. These include violence and sexual assault prevention, bystander intervention, and disease prevention. Many events are in collaboration with other departments and offices and with community partners through our Wellness Health Advisory Board. AWARE AWARE is a psycho-educational program designed for students facing substance related violations on- or off-campus. Students with alcohol and other drug issues may be referred by Judicial Affairs, Residence Life, faculty/staff, community agencies, and by other students. Student Disability Penn State Altoona is strongly committed to providing equal access to academic programs and services for all students with disabilities that are otherwise qualified. Students with special needs including physical or psychological impairments, learning disabilities, or ADHD are encouraged to meet with the disability services coordinator prior to attending classes to put reasonable accommodations in place. Accommodations may include classroom assistance or early registration. Documentation from a licensed clinical professional must be submitted for review indicating the functional limitations related to the disability and suggested accommodations. Information on specific documentation requirements and the procedure for registration with Student Disability Resources may be found at altoona.psu.edu/offices-divisions/student- affairs/health-wellness/student-disability-resources. Billing Charges apply for certain services and can be billed to the student’s private health insurance, paid by cash, check, or billed to the student’s bursar account. Third party billing helps alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by students and their parents. 24
