Alcohol and Controlled Substance Policy
The inappropriate use of a controlled substance or alcohol is detrimental to Vincennes University's faculty, staff, students,
and the public served. The University will attempt to assist a student involved with the inappropriate use of alcohol or a
controlled substance in obtaining rehabilitation. However, the ultimate responsibility for overcoming a dependency or
inappropriate use of alcohol or of a controlled substance is that of the student. The University does not accept or condone the
inappropriate use of alcohol or of a controlled substance by any individual student of the University. The University will
enforce all state and federal laws regarding the possession and use of alcohol and the manufacture, distribution, dispensing,
possession, or use of any controlled substance.
Policy on Parent/Guardian Notification
Section 444 of the General Education Provisions Act (20 U.S.C. 1232 g) was amended by Congress in 1998 to authorize
university officials to notify parents or guardians when students have violated alcohol or drug policies. Effective August 20,
2001 Vincennes University implemented the following criteria for parent/guardian notification.
Criteria for Parent/Guardian Notification

. A student’s parent or guardian may be notified if they have met the following criteria involving alcohol.
1.
The student is found responsible for violating university alcohol or drug policy
2.
The student is under 21 years of age at the time.
Part II
. A student’s parent or guardian will be notified if they meet the criteria in Part I and at least one of the following
criteria in regards to the student’s involvement in a violation involving alcohol or a controlled substance.
1. The student received a sanction of probation or stronger through the campus judicial system because of the serious
nature of the incident and not because of prior alcohol or drug problems.
2. The incident involved significant property damage.
3. The student was found responsible for harassment or intimidation while under the influence of alcohol or drug.
4.
Medical attention to any person, including the student, was required as a result of the student’s alcohol or drug-related
behavior.

him/herself or others.

parent(s)/guardian(s) will be sent a letter. It will inform them that you have been found responsible for a violation of the
Student Conduct Code involving alcohol and/or other drugs and the sanctions imposed.
Attendance Policy Procedures
Students should file reasons for absences with verification
of such in the Dean of Students Office (verification means to
document that the reason is true by providing evidence). The University Health Services personnel will be the only
University staff to offer verification of the student's illness. Service to the institution, extended illness, and death in the
family are examples of reasons for absences that must be filed with proper verification from the student. Reasons for
absences must be filed immediately on return to the institution. Absence information is available to any faculty member by
calling the Dean of Students Office. Faculty will have students complete an attendance information card during the first
class meeting.
