                ADVISING
  FAQs
What is academic advising? Academic advising is a collaborative partnership between a student and an advisor with the goal of the student successfully progressing to graduation. Advising can be provided
by a staff advisor, faculty advisor, or a peer advisor. Advising can be one-on-one or in groups.
Who is my academic advisor? You will
be assigned an academic advisor based on your major.
yyEach department assigns advisors
differently. Your freshman advisor may be your advisor for your entire academic career, or your advisor may change yearly, or your advisor may change by some other criteria. See your department’s Blackboard site for more information on how advisors are assigned.
yyIf you are involved in special programs on campus, you may have other academic advisors available to you. For example, these departments also provide academic advisors: Athletics, Disability Resource Center, Educational Opportunity Program, and Kellogg Honors College.
yyAdvisor assignments are updated each summer and posted each fall.
yyThe Student Success Center will post the list of advisors for all majors in the college.
How do I meet with my academic advisor? Each advisor sees students differently. Some may offer drop-in advising, others may only schedule advising by appointment. Check with your advisor to find out his/her preference.
When do I need academic advising? At least once a year, more if needed. Some majors have required advising once a year; check with your department.
How do I contact my advisor? You can contact your advisor by visiting their office, by phone, or by email. Your advisor will contact you mostly by your CPP email account.
What will I learn from academic advising?
Through regular contact with your advisor, and being an active participant in the advising partnership, you should be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes by the end of your first year: yyKnowledge of your major curriculum. yyDevelopment of an academic plan.
yyA collaborative partnership with your
academic advisor.
yyKnowledge of university resources. yyParticipation in the Huntley College of
Agriculture community.
What is mandatory advising? Many majors in the Huntley College of Agriculture require that you meet with your academic advisor at least once a year. A hold will be placed on your registration to insure that you get advising before you register for classes. You will need to meet with your advisor to get the hold released.
