Student Success Center (SSC)
The Student Success Center is located on the second floor of the Library-Student
Success Center building, where students have access to drop-in tutorial centers,
including general tutoring, a Math & Science Center, Writing Center, Reading Success
Center, Multidisciplinary Computer Lab and a Faculty Innovation Center. The Student
Success Center also offers a Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Directed Learning
Activities (DLA), academic skills workshops and peer-led tutoring. During the fall and
spring semesters, the drop-in centers are open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8
p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The summer session hours
are: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the center is closed on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. The Student Success Center is closed when classes are not in
session. For additional information, call the Compton College Student Success Center at
310-900-1600, ext. 2535. All services are FREE to registered Compton College students.
Academic Tutoring
Tutoring is free and available to all Compton Center students. The tutorial program is
certified through the highly regarded College Reading and Learning Association.
Tutoring is available in subjects such as anatomy, math, nursing, English, chemistry,
Spanish, physiology, English as a Second Language (ESL) and many others. All tutoring
sessions are available on a drop-in basis; no appointments are necessary.
Math & Science Center
The Math & Science Center provides free group tutoring on a drop-in basis by trained
peer tutors. The Math & Science Center sponsors programs to further assist math
students. The Math Workshop Series is a series of one-hour workshops presented by
tutors covering topics from basic math to college algebra. The Math & Sciences Center
can assist you with the following:
Understanding key concepts
Reviewing chapter content
Helping build stronger math/science study skills
Solving math and science problems
All tutoring is conducted in groups, and collaborative learning is encouraged.
Reading and Writing Center
The Writing Center provides free tutoring on a drop-in basis. Tutors assist students in
deciphering writing tasks, organizing writing assignments, developing content and learning
new critical thinking and reading strategies. While the tutors do not provide copyediting
services, they assist students in identifying and correcting specific grammatical errors and
developing reading comprehension skills. In addition, the center provides a Workshops
Series presented by trained teaching assistants. These series provide focused instruction on
particular skills and writing tasks, from fragment identification to scholarship essays.
What to Bring
For help with a specific class, bring a textbook or novel, supporting articles/notes,
course syllabus and current student ID.
