Compton College | 2017-2018 Student Handbook - page 42

How many units must someone take to be considered a full-time
student?
Taking 12 units per semester is considered a full-time load for fall and spring semesters.
A full-time load for the summer and winter sessions is 10 units. To be eligible for
athletics and certain programs, a student must be considered full-time.
What is the maximum number of units I can take?
The college policy for the maximum number of units per semester is 18. The unit
limitation varies for other terms (summer and winter). Students wishing to take more
than 18 units in one semester must submit an Overload Petition to the Admissions
Office for approval.
How long will it take me to complete my goal at Compton College?
It is difficult to answer this question because so much depends on how much time you
have to devote to attending school. Determine how many classes you need to meet your
goal and calculate how many classes you can take per semester. Remember, summer
sessions offer many course selections and can assist in speeding up your education
plan.
What is the attendance policy?
Attendance is the responsibility of the student. Each instructor has his or her own
method of accountability for attendance. Because attendance may seem unstructured,
the student has to make class attendance a priority. If your absences and tardiness
exceed 10 percent of the class meeting time, you may be dropped from the class.
Do I have to declare a major?
It is now required by law (Student Success Act SB 1456) that all students declare a
major upon admittance (majors can be changed by the student anytime). In order for
Compton College to successfully guide students toward graduation, it is required that all
new and returning students meet with an academic counselor upon initial entry to create
an educational plan and/or completion of 15 units.
Can students bring children to class?
Children are not permitted in classrooms while class is in session. Attendance in class is
limited to officially enrolled students and authorized visitors or guests. In addition,
students must not allow children to be left unsupervised or unattended anywhere on the
Compton College campus.
What do I do if the class I want to take is closed?
At the time of registration, if a class for which you want to register is closed, you may try
to add the class by attending the first time it meets. If there is space available in the
class, the instructor will give you an add slip. Your next step is to follow the instructions
and add the class through your MyECC student portal. You may also seek the advice of
a counselor who may suggest an alternate class and inform you of other options
available to you.
