HOW TO TRANSFER TO A FOUR-YEAR
UNIVERSITY
First, get help! Utilize the many services offered by the Transfer Center (D-29) and set
up an appointment with an academic counselor, a Transfer Center counselor or a
university representative to review where you are in meeting transfer admissions
requirements. The following six steps can be a guide to your approach.
STEP 1: NARROW DOWN YOUR FOUR-YEAR CAMPUSES AND
MAJOR OPTIONS
You will eventually want to focus on a major and a university to determine your specific
requirements for transfer. Take some time to explore your interests, values and skills in
choosing a major. Then conduct a search for the campus that best fits what you are
looking for in a university. Look at the university catalogs, visit the university website,
meet with a university representative and go on a tour of the university to get a feel for
the campus environment. You may also want to visit
and use the
“Explore Majors” function to get a list of universities that offer your major.
STEP 2: FULFILL YOUR GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
You can do this by fulfilling the CSU General Education certification pattern if you wish
to transfer to a CSU or the IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer
Curriculum) pattern if you may be applying to UC and CSU. It is important to note that
the IGETC pattern may not be appropriate for certain majors; check
or
make an appointment with a counselor for information. The General Education patterns
for many independent universities are also available in the Transfer Center (D-29).
STEP 3:
COMPLETE THE NUMBER OF REQUIRED TRANSFERABLE
UNITS/GRADES
You must complete a minimum of 60 transferable units to meet minimum admissions
requirements for UC and CSU. Fewer units are required for transfer admissions to many
independent universities. A minimum grade point average of a 2.0 for CSU and 2.4 for
UC is a requirement in transferable courses. However, the minimum grade point
average does not guarantee acceptance to all campuses and all majors. The higher
your grade point average is, the greater the opportunity to be accepted to the university
and major of your choice.
STEP 4: COMPLETE ANY REQUIRED MAJOR PREREQUISITIES
In order to be the most competitive and most prepared, courses specified in the
particular major at the university you have chosen should be completed before transfer.

or check the major guide sheets located in the
Counseling Department for specific major requirements at various colleges and
universities.
