Strive to Get Good Grades
Good grades may have come naturally to you in high school, but you have to
earn them in college. That means setting goals and working as hard as you can
to achieve them.
12.
Set Some Goals
Write down what you hope to achieve in your time at SBVC and put is
somewhere you will see each day ( on the bathroom mirror on in your cell
phone). The goal can be large (graduate) or small (finishing that English paper
a day early). Be sure your goal is something you can achieve.
13.
Familiarize Yourself with Campus Resources
If you are having trouble understanding a concept, look for campus resources
to assist you. Seek help from the library, tutoring center, & writing lab. If you
prefer working with other students, join or form a study group.
14.
Take Responsibility for Yourself
Do not blame others if you make a mistake. College professors expect you to
own up to your mistakes and take responsibility for your faults. Lean from those
experiences.
15.
Don’t Procrastinate…
It may have been ok in high school to wait a day before assignments were
due to begin hem, that will not work in college !! Your professors expect
your assignments to be complete, carefully done, and on time. Learn to set
deadlines and stick to them.
16.
Understand Your Financial Aid Package
Make sure you know the details of your financial aid package.
17.
Develop Your Interests
Being a musician, an athlete, an artist, a reader, or an animal lover is part of
who you are. Stay tuned into those interests while adding new knowledge as a
college student.
18.
Do Not Cut Corners
It may seem ok to procrastinate and then cram right before a test. You might
even do ok, however you will not really learn or retain much of that information.
19.
Discover Your Best Practices For Learning
Everyone is different, right? So it only makes sense that everyone learns
differently. The demands of college will be great, so to meet those demands,
you will be required to work efficiently. To understand how you learn, take a
learning style inventory (there are many free ones on the web), learn your
strengths and use them.
20.
Visualize Success
It always helps you achieve a goal if you devote some time to visualizing
yourself achieving it. Not just vaguely daydreaming but seeing yourself as a
success and experiencing the feelings that go with success. This will give you
the motivation to go out and do what you have to do to make it happen.
