General Information
Attendance
Attendance and participation are necessary and required components to successfully
complete a course. Successful students attend class regularly, come to each class prepared,
and engage in class activities. Classes at WNCC are set up in a format in which students
are not only participating in lectures and discussions, but they are also experiencing a
variety of activities throughout the semester that help them master the material. It is vital
for students’ success that they have the ability to experience these different learning tools
for maximum benefit from the course. Students who are repeatedly tardy or absent from
class miss vital components necessary for their success. Students should review their
respective instructor’s attendance policy found in the class syllabus.
Attendance in Online Classes
“Academic attendance” for online courses includes submitting an academic
assignment, taking an exam, engaging in an interactive tutorial or computer-assisted
instruction, participating in an online discussion about academic matters, and initiating
contact with a faculty member to ask a question about the academic subject studied
in the class. This does not include activities where students may be present, but not
academically engaged, such as logging in without active participation. When students
are not engaged, they may be dropped from the class.
Cancellation of Classes/Campus Closures
In order to have a consistent procedure to notify all students, faculty, and staff with
regard to any cancellation of day and/or night classes on the campus, an administrative
decision is made, if at all possible prior to 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. In Scottsbluff, the area media,
(KMOR, KNEB, and KDUH-TV) are notified and asked to make the announcement
within the 7 to 8 a.m. newscast and the 5 to 6 p.m. newscast. Listen to one of these
stations for notification of cancellation. For cancellations in Sidney, listen to KSID radio,
1340 AM/98.7 FM. In Alliance, students should tune to KCOW 1400 AM.
Updates and bulletins are also posted on the College website at
