Course Admission Policy
The policy of the College is that, unless specifically exempted by statute or regulation, every course, course section, or class
reported for state aid, wherever offered and maintained by the college, shall be fully open to enrollment and participating by
any person who has been admitted to the college and, when applicable, a relevant program, and who meets established
prerequisites.
Prerequisites
Many BC courses have basic skills or course prerequisites. These prerequisites are established to assist students in selecting
courses for which they have the entry level skills. Students who believe that they have the entry level skills without the
appropriate assessment test scores or previous courses may challenge the prerequisite. Students have the right to:
1.
Appeal a prerequisite course requirement because the required course is not available.
2.
Challenge any prerequisite believed to be discriminatory.
3.
Challenge any matriculation regulations/procedures that have the effect of being discriminatory based on how the
services are applied to you.
4.
Be provided with alternative services for the matriculation process if necessary for ethnic and language minority
students and students with disabilities.
Students must meet certain requirements prior to enrolling in a particular course. Completing a more basic course or obtaining
a minimum score on a placement exam may be required. Prerequisites for courses are listed in both the schedule of classes
and the college catalog.
Early Registration
Continuing students who were registered on Monday of the third week of classes are assigned early registration appointments
for the following semester in the following order:
•
Students who belong to specific group of special programs and who have completed matriculation.
•
Students who have completed orientation, assessment, and counseling and have a student educational plan on file
in descending order of the number of units completed, except that students have completed 45 to 68 will be first.
Registering by Web
All early and open registration takes place in Bakersfield College’s web registration system. Detailed instructions for the use of
this system can be found on the Bakersfield College website at
under class schedule.
Students must be officially registered or on the official waitlist before attending classes. Registration dates are indicated in the
“About the College” section of the catalog and on the website.
Waitlist
The electronic waitlist feature replaces instructor-signed add slips and allows students from an established waitlist to be moved
into a class when seats are available. It is a true first-come, first-serve system. Students trying to register for classes that are
closed will be able to select waitlist. During the weeks prior to the start of classes, when vacancies occur in classes, first
student(s) on the waitlist will be moved into the class. Students who are on a waitlist should check their registration regularly
on the web. They will have ten (10) days to pay for the class once they have moved into registered students. Students will not
be charged the enrollment fees for waitlist classes until they are actually enrolled in the class.
Students should use the waitlist to ensure themselves a chance of getting into the classes they want. Students on waitlist still
must attend the first meeting of the class or they may be dropped from the waitlist. The prerequisites, basic skills, time conflict
and repeat checks will prevent ineligible students from moving into the classes. Students may drop themselves from the
waitlist at any time. If a new section of a class is opened at the same day and time as a section with a waitlist, students on the
waitlist will be automatically enrolled into the new section.
Payment Deadline
Students will be allowed 10 calendar days (including weekends and holidays) from date of registration to submit payment
(Daily Drop Process). If students register less than 10 days from the first day of instruction, payment is due the Sunday before
classes begin. If payment is not received by the due date, classes may be dropped.
Student Attendance
Students have the responsibility to attend classes regularly and apply themselves to the college classes in which they are
enrolled. When you have been absent due to illness, you should explain the absence(s) to your instructor. No credit will be
