Commencement Ceremonies
Commencement ceremonies are held once each year in May. Students who complete their degree requirements during the
fall, summer, or spring prior to the ceremony or who will complete them in the following summer, are eligible to participate.
Diplomas are mailed to graduates by the end of July.
The associate in arts or the associate in science degree shall be conferred by the Board of Trustees of the Kern Community
College District upon a Bakersfield College student who has satisfactorily completed the requirements. These requirements
are consistent with those prescribed by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges and the Board of
Trustees of the Kern Community College District.
Dates for Graduation
A student completing their final coursework in the summer, but who would like to participate in the once a year May
commencement ceremony, should file for summer graduation beginning May 1 to June. Students must file for graduation
before the following deadline dates:
Fall Graduation:
November 1
Spring Graduation: April 1
Summer Graduation: July 1
File for Graduation
1.
Complete the Candidacy for Graduation
2.
Log in to InsideBC
3.
Click on the Student Tab.
4.
Find the MyDegreePath box
5.
Click on Go to MyDegreePath. Check your Degree Works to make sure your catalog rights are stated and the major
you are requesting is the major that is being evaluated.
6.
Students whose major is not correct can chose to process a What if Evaluation.
7.
Under worksheets click on what if, choose your catalogs rights, choose the major you want to process and Click on
Process What if button on top.
8.
Under Degree Progress you need to be at a 96% to file for graduation.
9.
If your Degree Progress is under 96% you need to see a counselor.
10.
Print your MyDegreePath and attach it to the Candidacy for Graduation Petition form. Turn them both in at the
Admissions and Records office Window #6.

Academic skills assessment is designed to determine students’ entry level skills in reading, writing and math. The writing of an
English essay may be required for placement in an English composition course (ENGL B1a, ENGL B50, ENGL B60, ACDV
B80) or English for Multilingual Students (EMLS). Academic skills assessment may be waived by providing proof of eligibility
for admission to a California State University with the appropriate combination of ACT and SAT scores and high school grade
point average.

Tutoring is a wonderful service available to all currently enrolled BC students. The primary goal is to help students succeed in
their academic endeavors and best of all it is a FREE service. The one-on-one peer tutoring sessions are done by trained
students who can assist you with most BC courses. Tutoring Center hours occasionally change from semester to semester
depending on tutor availability. Appointments can be made in person or by calling the office.
