PERFORMING ARTS
Jazz Ensemble
Under the direction of Kris Tiner, the Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble performs throughout the
year on campus and at local concert venues. The concert repertoire spans the history of jazz, from
classic works to premieres of original compositions by visiting artists and BC student composers.
Recent concert programs have focused on the music of Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, and
Charles Mingus. Guest artists who have performed with the BC Jazz Ensemble include multiple-
woodwind master Vinny Golia, trombonist Michael Vlatkovich, and award-winning Canadian
trumpeter Paul Tynan. In addition to the large ensemble, advanced jazz students have the
opportunity to perform at our small group events or in the Funk and Afro-Beat Band.
Each semester the jazz program hosts a visiting artist workshop where jazz students have the
opportunity to collaborate and interact with renowned creative musicians from around the world.
Recent visiting artists have included jazz legend and Pulitzer Prize finalist Wadada Leo Smith,
innovative bassist and composer John Lindberg, fusion guitarist G.E. Stinson, and NYC drummer Harris Eisenstadt. In April,
2016 the jazz program kicked off the inaugural KCMEA Jazz Day at Bakersfield College, an all-day festival featuring stellar pro
clinicians, workshops, and performances from over a dozen regional college, high school, and junior high jazz ensembles.
